Mark your calendar for historic Irvington’s 44th Annual Benton House Tour of Homes, the longest consecutively running home tour in the city of Indianapolis! The tour will be held on Sunday, September 17, 2017, from noon to 5 p.m. This year’s theme is “Exploring a Century in Irvington,” putting the spotlight on homes and landmark buildings that have been on the map for at least 100 years. Come check out the homes, along with classic cars, a scavenger hunt, live music, and cupcakes!
The tour kicks off at the Historic Benton House (312 South Downey Avenue), which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Benton House was built in 1873, featuring a Second Empire architectural style popularized by France’s emperor Napoleon III and popular in the Midwest and Northeast U.S. This landmark is a fully restored and furnished ten-room brick house that serves as a cultural and historical center for community use.
Other home tour stops will include:
- Bona Thompson Memorial Center
- 51 South Ritter Avenue
- 303 North Irvington Avenue
- 329 North Ritter Avenue
- 477 North Audubon Road
- 5882 East Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive
- 55 North Sheridan Avenue
- 5703 East Washington Street, Apartment #24
- 37 South Johnson Avenue Maplewood Court Cooperative, celebrating their 100th anniversary!
Ticket-holders will tour Unit 1 (first floor only), Units 2 and 9, and Unit 15 (first floor only).
Tour attendees are also encouraged to stop by the giant 400-year-old Kile Oak (one of the largest bur oak trees in Indiana) or take a step back in time at the Wilson Parker Pioneer Cemetery. Both landmarks are also designated historic sites by the Irvington Historic Landmarks Foundation.
Classic Car Show
This year also marks the return of the Classic Car Show as part of the annual Benton House Tour of Homes. Anyone with a classic car is invited to be a part of the event. Cars must arrive at the Benton House no later than 11:30 a.m., with the event lasting the duration of the home tour from 12-5 p.m. There is no cost to register. Please contact Andrew Mankus at email@example.com with any questions. Awards will be given at 4 p.m. and will include Best in Show, Crowd Favorite, Most Muscle, Best Paint, and Best Interior.
Purchase your tickets online via EventBrite. Tickets are $12 in advance of the tour and $15 the day of the tour. Or you can purchase tickets at Black Sheep, Bookmamas, and Ace Hardware.
