In 2012, the Irvington Development Organization spearheaded construction and fundraising for the Washington Streetscape; a full renovation of Irvington’s main street to allow for safer pedestrian routes, bike parking, and calmed traffic. Local Landscape Architecture firm Landstory partnered with the community to understand the history of the area and develop a design to complement the modern uses of the road as well as respect and recall the history of Irvington. The enhanced streetscape has enriched businesses by bringing visitors and residents in with its charming downtown feel, and become the local face of our neighborhood.
The significance of the National Road in Irvington’s past cannot be understated, and by enhancing Washington Street’s feel, IDO and the Irvington community have used the rich history of the area to create a thriving marketplace in the center of our community. By partnering with other Irvington community organizations, developers, and local businesses, IDO raised over $2 million dollars in grant money and donations to make the project possible. Not only is Washington Street a much friendlier place for businesses in Irvington, it has become a centerpiece and cornerstone of IDO’s efforts to foster development locally.
With the construction behind us, our commitment now is to keep the flowers blooming, trees growing, and lights glowing. We also want to add new amenities and need to replace and repair the features over time. If you enjoy the Irvington Streetscape, please consider joining us in maintaining and enhancing it for generations to come!
