IDO partnered with a private developer, Irvington Partners LLC, in 2011 to acquire the former Indy East Motel site at 5855 East Washington Street and create contemporary, quality, affordable rental housing in the heart of Irvington. The former motel had been vacant since 2009. The 50 units have a loft feel with a contemporary design that complements the surrounding historic architecture. The apartments have several features that make the structure extremely energy efficient and sustainable, including a garden to be shared by the residents, a cistern to collect rain water, a partial green roof, and solar panels.
